Climb out of Taichung on the famous Chikan Peak 赤崁頂 route, the local favourite with road cyclists. You'll pass the Buddhist Mt Lianhua temple 蓮華山護國清涼寺 on your way up. Descend to Guoxing 國姓, where you'll find plenty of local lunch options.

Continue south, arriving at Puli 埔里, a town brimming with overnight options.
