Dashed lines are the options for this stage, see below.
Stage 5a
Stay a night in Puli to get an early rise for another challenging day of climbing. From Puli, you'll venture for the first time into the higher mountains of central Taiwan. The climb up to Ren'ai is around 20 km and takes you 700 m up in one go. Enjoy the views while taking on the challenging switchbacks.
Once you've reached Ren'ai 仁愛, you can choose to overnight in this (boring but conveniently located) mountain village, climb a little further to stay at one of the homestays in or close to Qingjing Farm, or head down to the shady former hot spring resort villages of Lushan or further.
From Ren'ai, we present one of the lesser-known mountain roads, taking you alongside the Wushe Reservoir 霧社水庫 and into the Aowanda 奧萬大 and Bukai 武界 valley, all the way up to Sun Moon Lake. We consider this one of the better off-grid experiences of this trip! Just follow the route and take in the countryside's beauty against the backdrop of the higher mountains of central Taiwan.
